Julia Ausloos-Bedinger, Architect, Senior Associate, Architectural Resources Group

Julia attended graduate school at CU Denver achieving a Master’s in Architecture and a Master of Science in Historic Preservation. During her tenure at CU Denver, she worked as a Research Assistant at the Center of Preservation Research, where she practiced advanced methods in 3D Documentation, such as Laser Scanning and Photogrammetry. While at the Center she documented more than a dozen historic sites throughout the United States. For the past 10 years, Julia has been with Architectural Resources Group, an architecture, planning and conservation firm that focuses on the preservation, rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of our built environment. At ARG Julia is an Architect, Senior Associate and the Documentation Technical Specialist, where she helps to guide her colleagues in the best and proper use of 3D digital documentation technologies and leads the firm’s efforts in exploring and utilizing new technologies that will benefit and better the firm’s historic preservation projects.

 

Scott Ernst, Reality Capture Specialist, Southwest Scanning

After a long career working in the preservation field as a craftsman, Scott Ernst turned his attention to 3D digital documentation in 2017 and started Southwest Scanning. With a focus on historic structures, Scott uses LiDAR, photogrammetry and CAD to help his clients accurately document and analyze the current condition of their projects.

 

Chris Gray

Chris Gray, FRICS, Preservation & Reality Capture; Co-Chair, APT Technical Committee on Documentation

Chris Gray is a fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors – an international expert with over 40 years of experience in the survey of complicated buildings both in the USA and Internationally. He specializes in the use of innovative survey tools, including laser scanning and photogrammetry, to generate highly accurate 2D and 3D CAD, BIM and more recently augmented and virtual reality. His career includes head of survey procurement at English Heritage and head of survey at the Getty Conservation Institute. He is the founder of the APT Technical Committee for Documentation. Gray has taught and published extensively throughout the USA and internationally.

 

 

 

 

Donald Harvey, P.E., Vice President, Atkinson-Noland & Associates 

Mr. Donald Harvey, P.E. is Vice President at Atkinson‐Noland & Associates in Boulder, Colorado, a consulting engineering firm specializing in the evaluation and repair of masonry and historic structures. Mr. Harvey received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Texas at Austin in Architectural Engineering and Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. He has authored several papers relating to the nondestructive evaluation of structures, masonry material testing, and evaluation methods for existing buildings, and he serves on several ASTM committees related to masonry. Mr. Harvey recently served on the Board of Directors of the Structural Engineers Association of Colorado (SEAC), teaches the Masonry Design class in the Engineering School at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and serves as a technical advisor to the Rocky Mountain Masonry Institute (RMMI).

 

Jason Jeffries, P.E. LEED AP, Senior Project Manager, Forensic Engineering Specialist, JVA, Inc. 

Jason Jeffries, P.E., LEED AP is a Senior Project Manager at JVA, Inc. in Denver, Colorado and he earned Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Civil Engineering (structural). With over 20 years of experience, he specializes in the investigation and repair of existing structures as an integral member of the company’s historic preservation and forensic engineering team having performed countless assessments caused by natural and man-made perils. To enhance his ability to document and evaluate critical elements that are difficult to access, Jason became an FAA Part 107 pilot and has been utilizing drones for this purpose since 2016.

 
 

Jason Messing, AIA, NCARB, Project Architect, Anderson Hallas Architects

Jason Messing, AIA, NCARB, is a registered architect in Colorado with 16 years of experience and is also a seasoned woodcrafter/handyman. He practices with Anderson Hallas Architects on historic preservation projects which align well with his personal interests. From the time that Jason's career as an architect began, he has consistently gravitated towards new advances in computers, applications, and technology that strengthen his creative abilities and interests. He also strives to achieve work/life balance by infusing some of his creative passions into his everyday work. Becoming an FAA part 107 certified remote pilot was but one such way and has for several years been a passion project which melds a great deal of FUN with some practical, real-world uses. In his free time, Jason volunteers often; currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Ghost Town Club of Colorado and HistoriCorps, and has also served as a grant reviewer for the Colorado Preservation Saving Places Program. Jason resides in Lakewood, CO with his girlfriend, four dogs, and six chickens.

 

Torin McCue, E.I., Engineer Intern, Atkinson-Noland & Associates

Mr. McCue is an engineer intern with Atkinson-Noland & Associates, joining the firm in 2016, a consulting firm specializing in evaluation and repair of masonry materials and structures. Mr. McCue received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder, graduating with Magna Cum Laude honors. He also received a dual Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Minho (Portugal) and the Czech Technical University in Prague, graduating with honors. The master’s degrees were granted as part of a joint international program, the Structural Analysis of Historic Constructions (SAHC), which focuses on the conservation of historic structures.

 

Ekaterini ‘Kat’ Vlahos, Professor, University of Colorado-Denver, College of Architecture and Planning

Kat is a licensed architect and Professor at CU Denver, where she served as Chair of the Department of Architecture and Director of the Center of Preservation Research (CoPR). She established CoPR as a preservation lab focused on experiential learning. Kat has been recognized alongside her research associates and graduate students with the Stephen H. Hart Award for outstanding historic preservation in Colorado, the Preservation Leadership Award, and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Collaborative Practice Award. Her expertise lies in innovative methods for understanding vernacular architecture and cultural landscapes in the American West. Professor Vlahos advocates for informed decision-making through comprehensive documentation and holds leadership roles on various national and international boards dedicated to the understanding and stewardship of historic sites.
